CHAPTER THIRTY-THREE

The lights in the cave came on very early the next morning. Tyler checked his watch; it was four AM. There were multiple grumblings from the interior of the bus as people came awake. The far door opened and their jailor yelled out two names.

“Brittany Sheridan and Helen Babinsky, please come with me.”

He set the box of sandwiches and water on the ground and waited by the open door. The night was still holding onto the desert and Brady yelled at the guy, his head hanging out the window.

“Jesus Christ! Let us fucking sleep. We have nothing to do all day and to remain in our little seats for awhile longer wouldn’t kill you assholes.”

“You can go back to sleep when I leave. Right now Miss Brittany and Miss Helen are needed.”

Tyler slid off his bench seat and walked down the aisle. He stepped down off the bus and approached the dark-haired man with sleep still tucking in at the corners of his brain.

“Helen didn’t recover very well from the last time you took her. Why don’t you try someone else.”

“Today, it’s Helen’s turn.” The man stood firm.

Tyler glanced over his shoulder as the two women came toward him. They were silent in their fear, and, if he could smell it, then the air held terror.

“You don’t have to go.” He said absurdly knowing none of them had a choice.

“We will be all right, Tyler. See you in a few hours.” Helen patted his arm and stood on tippy toes to give him a kiss on his cheek.

“Come on, ladies. The day is dawning.”

They followed him out the door and were surprised not to feel the prick of a needle in their necks. The man opened the door for them to enter an ATV and then slammed it hard, sliding in behind the wheel.

“You are not drugging us this time?”

“Figure, you know we aren’t going to hurt you and if you look around, there is no where for you to run.”

The two women that had been linked since the bus stop scanned the darkness before them. They could not see more than the ten yards in front of them that the ATV’s lights allowed. Bumping through a heavily scarred and rough track, they leaned into each other as the drive continued for five minutes. At a large windowless building, the ATV stopped and the man hopped out.

“Last stop, ladies.”

“What’s that supposed to mean?” Helen demanded, ignoring the hand extended to her.

“What? Nothing, ma’am. Just, we’re here.” He stammered.

Helen glanced at the large building. It was made of stucco and was as big as a house, but there were no windows. She glanced around in the predawn light, seeing just the outline of other buildings nearby.

For the first time since she had been taken, she felt real fear creep up her spine like an insidious alien being grabbing hold of her. She backed up and smacked right into Brittany.

“Hey, me here.” Brittany took her hand and squeezed it with confidence. “We’ve done this before, Helen.
